What Child Is This?

About this product

The melody for this carol is "Greensleeves," dating from Elizabethan time or perhaps even earlier. The song was first registered in 1850 to Richard Jones with lyrics that were neither religious nor respectable, and in fact Shakespeare mentions it by name in "The Merry Wives of Windsor" in which is it played while traitors are being hung. In 1865 William Chatterton Dix wrote "The Manger Throne," three verses of which created "What Child Is This?" and in 1871 Sir John Strainer harmonized it and introduced it as the Christmas carol most are familiar with today. This new more modern arrangement changes the meter to 4/4 (rather than the familiar 3/4) and couples it with subtle rhythmic nuance, which adds freshness to the piece while at the same time endowing it with a stronger sense of calm.

Advanced Piano Solo Series
Setting themselves apart from numerous other compositions labeled "advanced" in many books, the arrangements in the Advanced Piano Solo Series are in fact considered by recital judges to be advanced. While arrangements produce a grand and full sound, they do not contain the lengthy runs, extreme jumps, and rapid rhythm changes found in the Virtuosic Series. These arrangements provide countless opportunities for piano students to practice and master specific techniques, and they may be played slower than notated without losing the beauty and grand scale of the arrangement. They are sure to please every audience.

Peaceful

I often played it in the past 2 years and its still an amazing piece. There are only 4 pages and it is good to learn. The advanced aspect is the complementary rhythm that creates a unit and continuity. But once you internalized it the rest will be no problem!

A classical Carol

This classical Christmas Carol is very beautiful and sounds like an entire orchestra around the well-known and central musical motif.
